Episode 12
All Marc wants is a little romance. Instead, he has a lot of issues. Because of a strict Orthodox Jewish upbringing, and an intestinal illness that lasted well into adulthood, 30-year old Marc has only been out for five years, and has still never been in a relationship. Pear-shaped and intensely self-loathing, Marc has been settling for paid hook-ups because he's convinced he's too dumpy and boring to have real romance - or even a real conversation with a guy. But an encounter with Sammy, a cute bartender, shows that Marc has a lot more romantic potential than he realizes.
Marc visits Mammasutra, a sweet-voiced yet masochistic pilates trainer, to take the first steps toward feeling good about his body. Marc's previous experiences with exercise all entailed walking up the stairs to his apartment, so the "heightened awareness" (read: pain) from the workout has him barely able to walk at all. Next up is a visit with Courtney, an improv comedian who will show Marc how to stop censoring and make lively conversation ... alphabetically! Finally, losing the glasses and schlubby clothes has Marc ready for his close-up, with Dick the photographer.
Thanks to his new clothes, glasses-free eyes and actual conversational skills, Marc has a new self-image. Emboldened, he meets the fresh-faced MJ on line, and the two agree to not just one, but two dates, both involving a little salsa. The first? A trip the Mexican restaurant, previously inconceivable for an intestinal disease sufferer. The second, a lesson in the most romantic of dances, the Salsa. Because of the encounters, Marc's finally convinced that he is worth dating.
