Lauren

Lauren grew up in Howard Beach, a predominantly Italian-American "old-school" community where gender roles were always clearly defined. In fact, Lauren herself bought into those roles, brushing her long hair, growing her nails long -- she did everything she could to fit into her environment.

Then, when she went away to college on a basketball scholarship, she discovered an entirely new queer world. She cut her hair and started dating women, but she still didn't feel like the term "lesbian" was the right one for her because it didn't encompass her gender identity.

Now back in Howard Beach, Lauren has to decide whether to risk her own personal safety by staying -- or whether she should leave everything she holds dear, including her boifriend, Liz, and move to San Francisco in hopes of a better life.
