Caroline joined the army when she was only seventeen years old. While in the military she met her husband, a navy corpsman, a former intravenous drug user, who died of AIDS complications in 1991. Caroline herself was diagnosed as HIV positive in 1986.
Caroline was discharged from the army in 1992 with full disability because of her HIV status. For the past 19 years Caroline has lived with HIV and has fought an ongoing battle of illnesses brought on by her drug regimen. Early fears that she would not survive led Caroline to being open about her HIV positive status.
At 38 years old, today she does a good deal of volunteer work and has become a spokesperson for HIV/AIDS. She is one of the founders of "Straight from San Diego" a local support group. She met her boyfriend, ride partner/tent-mate at one of their functions.
