Perhaps no face more clearly embodies the colorful spirit of the AIDS/LifeCycle than that of Ric.
Also known as "Ginger Brewlay," Ric's drag queen alter ego, this flamboyant cheerleader has made it a practice to station herself at the hardest hills of the route in order to encourage, cajole, flirt and even push the exhausted riders to the top in high-heels.
Diagnosed in 1984 at the height of the AIDS epidemic, Ric has been battling the ravages of HIV/AIDS for over twenty years. Once a strong rider himself for 20 years in The Ride, Ric almost died several years ago after he completed an AIDS Ride and was rushed to the hospital for a triple bypass. Ric's weight was down to 90 pounds and he was expected to die.
Since that time, Ric has limited himself to cheering, and even this limited effort can be tiring and painful for him. Nevertheless, each morning, in the pre-dawn hours, he transforms himself from Ric to Ginger in order to play the role on which so many depend.
