Filmmaker Q & A
Q: What inspired you to make your film?
Barney: When I was studying acting in New York about 15 years ago, I worked part-time as a waitress at Lucky Cheng's on Lower East Side. There I befriended many drag queen waitresses. Ever since, I've become very sensitive to transgender issues and rights. Working with drag queens at Lucky Cheng's not only enriched my sensitivity as a person, the experience also gave me a fresh, unique life lens through which I see the world. This film is inspired by my relationship with Yvette and with my transgender friends.

Q: How did you come up with the idea for your film?
Barney: Yvette and I have been friends for a long time. Were best friends. I thought it would be cool to write something about best friends and structure the piece to mirror our relationship dynamic. I would do anything for Yvette, and I know she would do the same for me. So I asked the question: how far would you go to fulfill the last wishes of your very best friend.

Q: Who are your favorite filmmakers/what are a few of your favorite films and why?
Barney: Woody Allen is one of my favorite filmmakers. I had the chance to act opposite him in Hollywood Ending. In the film, Woody plays a blind director, and I play his translator and partner in crime, helping him direct a Hollywood film. Working closely with Woody gave me the opportunity to observe him direct the actors. I got the sense that he really trusts his actors. He gives very little, if any, directions.

Two of my favorite films are Lust, Caution and Billy Elliot. Although they are very different in style, they both have incredible characters in extraordinary circumstances.

Q: Anything else youd like to provide on your film?
Barney: Filmmaking is a collaborative process, and I would like to thank everyone involved in the making of The Red Dress. For more information go to: barneycheng.tv as well as The Red Dress website: subversiveflix.com
