Jarrah Gurrie

Birthplace: Geelong, Australia
Current place of residence: Brooklyn NY
Film School: NYU, Currently 3rd Year Grad Student
First Project: 'Bright Lights' a short film made for a 24-hour Film Festival in Australia Recent Projects: 'Cabalerno,' which aired on The Click List in 2006, also available on Boys Briefs 3 (Picture This!).

Currently developing another short film, this time with a female lead character -- it's about domestic disharmony and global warming! And I'm (trying to) write a feature adapted from a well known gay-themed novel, but I'm not telling you which one!

Filmmaker Q & A
Q: What inspired you to make your film?
Jarrah: This was actually a class exercise made for my directing teacher Milcho Manchevski, during my 2nd year of study at NYU. It was brainstormed, shot and edited all within 6 hours on a Monday afternoon.

Q: What do you hope to convey through your film?
Jarrah: I'm really interested in showing lonliness on screen and how people deal with it. I wanted to think of a sweet yet affecting way i could show this. I also had some pink paint lying around.

Q: Who are your favorite filmmakers/what are a few of your favorite films and why?
Jarrah: John Cassavetes - Improvisation, messy camera, Gena Rowlands.
Jane Campion - She's a tough woman with a gentle touch. And she's from my part of the world.
Almodovar - because he dealt with sexuality openly in the 'mainstream' before most people did and he has a wicked and sometimes disgusting sense of humor.
Terence Malik - He makes films like no-one else. Artful and a bit hypnotic recently.
Lukas Moodyson - Because he deals with deep emotions with a great sense of humor.

I have a pretty broad taste in movies -- like most filmmakers i guess. A couple of films that stuck with me from a couple of years ago are Mysterious Skin and Me, You and Everyone We Know, Eagle vs. Shark. I change my mind all the time.
