Earlier this year, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signed into law the Anti-Homosexuality Act that criminalizes homosexuality. John Wambere, a Ugandan gay rights activist and co-founder of LGBT group Spectrum Uganda Initiatives, was in the United States speaking on the escalating political, public, and physical attacks on LGBT people in Uganda at the time the law was enacted. He knew it would be dangerous to return and made the difficult decision to leave behind his family to seek asylum in the United States while continuing to advocate for LGBT rights. John is represented in his asylum claim by Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders.
