Meet the Logo30: Emil Cohen

"I find something authentic in the moment."

Every day during the month of June, we will be spotlighting our 2022 Logo30. This powerful series profiles ordinary and extraordinary people who show pride in unique and provocative ways. Visit the Logo30 homepage to view current and past honorees.

From photographing celebs such as Bowen Yang, Hillary Clinton, RuPaul's Drag Race queens, and Kacey Musgraves, one thing is for certain: Emil Cohen knows how to work a camera.

"I try and treat all my subjects with the same approach, regardless if they're a public personality or they're just an average Joe, which is to just always pull something authentic out of them," Cohen tells Logo. "My shoots are really dialogue-driven. It's a conversation, not an interview. So I really try and dive deep into what we're talking about. I find something authentic in the moment or something a lot deeper is always the end game. It's always my goal. I can almost take a step back and have the viewer and the subject engage in a moment between themselves. That to me is the most successful photo."

In addition to his subjects, Cohen also finds inspiration from living in New York, and the city's storied LGBTQ history.

"I'm a photojournalist in New York City, and that allows me to photograph the history of the city's queer community," he says. "Whether it's through nightlife or it's through politics, or it's just culture like photographing Pride parades, or the parties in Bushwick or Queens or anywhere in the city."

"I take a lot of pride in being one of many artists and documentarians to be able to capture us right now," adds Cohen.
