Megan Rapinoe and Her Twin Sister Came Out Together—Er, Kind Of

"I should thank Megan for blasting me like that."

We all know Megan Rapinoe, the purple-haired goddess and out athlete who led the U.S. Women's National Team to a World Cup victory in 2019. But did you know she has a gay sister?

In a recent episode of the Outsports podcast Five Rings To Rule Them All, Rapinoe's fraternal twin sister, Rachael Rapinoe, spoke about how she and her sister both realized they were gay and began to date women in college at the University of Portland in Oregon.

Both sisters were soccer players. Rachael's athletic career ended in 2012, but Megan has stayed with the sport since being drafted by the women's pro league post-grad in '09.

Being queer wasn't something the sisters talked about at first; however, they'd always been close, and Rachael said she knew Megan "probably felt the same way." A year later, Rachael broke up with her "best friend," a.k.a. the girl she'd been seeing. She and Megan ended up coming out to each other after Rachael's breakup, leading Megan to start owning her sexual orientation. (The former told podcast host Cyd Zeigler she struggled more due to their religious upbringing.)

Rachael was heartbroken, though, and when her and Megan's mother came to Portland for a visit, the truth came out.

"I was at class," Rachael said, "and her and Megan got to talking, and Megan came out to her. She didn’t take it very well—she was very upset—and Meg’s second reaction after coming out was: 'Well, Rachael’s gay too!'"

Does the pro athlete-turned-entrepreneur have any hard feelings toward her sister for outing her to their mom? Not at all: "I didn’t care, because I probably wouldn’t have said anything for a very long time, so you know, I should thank Megan for blasting me like that."

It's all water off a duck's back for the sisters Rapinoe.
