One of Théry's latest projects is a series of photographs mocking classic works of art, wherein Barbie serves as a replacement for their famous male subjects.

The series, which includes mocks of Da Vinci's The Last Supper, Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam, and Grant Wood's American Gothic, is now on display in an exhibition called "Not the ones you think" at the Teodora gallery in Paris.

According to Bored Panda, the series serves to "raise questions about beauty, intelligence, and women’s place in society – both then and now."

Barbie's figure is anything but Rubenesque - yet here she is posing in some of the most classic paintings from the Old Masters. French photographer Catherine Théry has recreated images such as Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam with the impossibly skinny toy doll injected into the male roles - giving Barbie the chance to play God. The series named "Pas celles que vous croyez," or "Not the ones you think," also includes reenactments of The Two Fridas, American Gothic and more. In many of the digitally-enhanced images Barbie appears as a hero, scholar or respected protector - challenging the old-fashioned notion that women are merely "decorative" subjects for high art. "In these images Barbie is not only beautiful; she is intelligent and cultured," said Théry.
