Last year, Star Trek: Discovery boldly went where no Star Trek series had gone before.

Nonbinary newcomer Blu del Barrio was cast as Adira, the first nonbinary character in the iconic sci-fi franchise's decades-long history, for the third season of the Paramount+ original series. They joined the show alongside transgender actor and fellow Logo30 honoree Ian Alexander (The OA), who plays Star Trek's first trans character.

When del Barrio's role was announced last fall, the 23-year-old actor chatted with GLAAD’s Nick Adams to shed some light on what fans could expect from their character:

Adira is a wonderfully complex character. Mainly because of this duality they have within them: they’re astonishingly intelligent and yet they’re still a kid. They experience their emotions at a heightened level, like most teenagers. That’s what makes them so fun to play. I like to describe them as cerebrally brilliant and emotionally a puppy. Adira is an introvert, but they keep a few people close to the chest, which I definitely resonate with. I don’t want to say too much and get in trouble, but all in all, Adira is a uniquely strange and beautiful character.

Speaking to Logo, del Barrio says they expressed their Pride in the past year by "having difficult conversations in the workplace."

"There are so many people working on a project, and I wanted to start having bigger conversations about being trans in this industry and what that means and how we can all work together to make every set a more inclusive space for trans actors, directors, crew members... everyone," they share. "So that was a big step for me this year, to speak up."
