AMMO Books and Todd Oldham Studio are presenting a new coffee table book featuring the work of 30 artists exploring queer identity through fiber craft.

Queer Threads: Crafting Identity and Community spotlights artists using traditional fiber craft methods such as crochet, embroidery, macramé, quilting and sewing to comment on the binaries of masculinity and femininity, queer and straight and even art and craft work.

The 192-page book features full-color spreads of each artist's work accompanied by interviews with LGBT culture makers, such as Jonathan Adler, Justin Vivian Bond, Costello Tagliapietra, Michael Cunningham, Tim Gunn, Kathleen Hanna and more.

The collection expands on an exhibition of the same name curated by John Chaich at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in Manhattan.

“When I saw the Queer Threads exhibition, I was so enamored with the technical skill and diverse ideas that these artists bring to hand-made traditions,” said Oldham, who designed the book. “This book celebrates not just fiber art, but queer creativity, which feels all the more necessary and vital in today’s political climate.”

“It’s so rare—and so cool—to find such a diverse collection of contemporary LGBTQ talent spanning ages, races, geographies, and identities in one place as you can in Queer Threads,” said Chaich. “The voices and visions of the artists and interviewers are as colorful and textured as the artworks themselves.”
