KAPOW! DC Comics has added another nonbinary character to its roster.
According to Deadline, the newbie hero in question is named Kid Quick and uses they/them pronouns. Like The Flash, Kid Quick, who is from an alternate universe, moves at super-high speeds. They're slated to make their comic-book debut in DC’s Merry Multiverse, a holiday-themed anthology due out next month. Later, they will appear as The Flash in the forthcoming series Future State: Justice League.
Kid Quick is DC's first superhero, but they aren't the comic book publisher's first nonbinary character. The Suicide Squad comics feature The Aerie, a nonbinary antihero. Marvel Comics also recently introduced Snowflake and Safespace, two nonbinary characters — although their very meta names sparked some controversy.
Nonbinary representation is increasing in other geeky mediums too. As NewNowNext reported in September, CBS' Star Trek: Discovery formally introduced its first trans characters, both of whom are played by LGBTQ actors. Blu de Barrio, a nonbinary newcomer, was cast as Adira, who is also nonbinary. And The OA breakout star Ian Alexander will play Gray, a trans Trill character.
