Texas Lawmaker Wants To Force Teachers To Out LGBT Students To Parents

Sen. Konni Burton argues that "a parent has a right to full and total information [about] their child."

Texas tea party state Sen. Konni Burton has filed legislation that would effectively require public school staff to out LGBT students to their parents.

Under Burton's Senate Bill 242, any school employee that fails to disclose a student's sexual or gender identity to their family would face disciplinary action, even if the student specifically asks for the information to remain private.

The senator (pictured above with Ted Cruz) says she was inspired to draft the bill after her native Fort Worth adopted new school guidelines, which barred faculty from disclosing a transgender student's identity to parents without their express permission.

The guidelines were hotly contested by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who spear-headed a hate campaign against the city in response. Officials eventually bowed to the pressure and removed the protections.

Burton, a Patrick ally, created SB 242 in order to ensure that schools across the state would be unable to restrict parent access to student information, a measure that is nothing more than a thinly-veiled attempt to discriminate against LGBT youth.

"We found these provisions in desperate need of clarity and expansion," Burton wrote. "That is why I am planning to file a bill that rewrites these provisions to make it unequivocally clear that a parent has a right to full and total information on their child’s academic performance, physical, mental and emotional health, and more."

"Further," she added, "my legislation will make it expressly against state law for a district to adopt policies designed to undermine a parent’s right to know. No parent in Texas should ever have to fight for the basic right to matter in their child’s life again."

Burton's bill is just one of many anti-LGBT initiatives set to go up before the Texas legislature this January, including a bill from fellow tea party Sen. Bob Hall, which would eliminate job protections for LGBT Texans.
