These Are the Most Popular Gay Wedding Songs of 2019

Pop classics from Whitney Houston, ABBA, and The Weather Girls all made the cut.

The top 10 most-played songs at gay weddings around the world are here, and yes, they're pretty queer.

Researchers from the event venue database Eventopedia analyzed data from thousands of songs streamed on Spotify, reports The Gay U.K. The songs were sourced from playlists with the terms "gay wedding 2019" or "LGBT wedding" in their names or descriptions, leading researchers to presume that they'd been played on the dance floor at some same-sex nuptials.

Topping the list was Whitney Houston's classic "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," which appeared more frequently than any other song on LGBTQ wedding-themed playlists and has a whooping 371 million streams on Spotify overall.

Unsurprisingly, the late pop icon wasn't the only diva to make the cut: Songs by Diana Ross, Shania Twain, and Lady Gaga also ranked in the top 10. However, what might surprise some is that Gaga's 2011 hit "Born This Way" was the only song released after 2000 to crack the top 10.

Across the list, the average release date is 1988. The average song length? Four minutes and six seconds.

"Weddings are often the most significant event of people’s lives, and having the right music to accompany it is just as important," Toby Heelis, founder of Eventopedia, told The Gay U.K. "The first dance is a defining moment, so making sure we choose the perfect soundtrack is paramount, as is ensuring the balance between being emotional and not being overly cringey."

Eventopedia's full top 10 list, not filtered by genre, is as follows:

1. "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" by Whitney Houston

2. "Dancing Queen" by ABBA

3. "It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls

4. "Uptown Funk" by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson

5. "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac

6. "September" by Earth, Wind, and Fire

7. "Best of My Love" by The Emotions

8. "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga

9. "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross

10. "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" by Shania Twain
