Jerrod Carmichael Apologizes to Jennifer Coolidge for What “the Gays” Did to Her

The Golden Globes host said sorry for what happened on 'The White Lotus' finale.

After taking off last year, the Golden Globes were back on TV this year, and the event kept its reputation as a glitzy and boozy celebration of Hollywood.

Last night's Golden Globes were also not a spoiler-free zone, at least when it came to the latest season of The White Lotus.

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael — who came out as gay last year — hosted the awards, and while introducing Jennifer Coolidge, who was presenting the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical-Comedy or Drama Television Series, he made a public apology for what "the gays" did to her on The White Lotus finale:

“As a gay man, I want to apologize to her on behalf of all of the gays for what we did to her on that boat,” Carmichael joked, referring to the final episode where a group of murderous gay men — led by Tom Hollander — try to kill Tanya (played by Coolidge). The stressful climatic scene was responsible for the meme that broke Gay Twitter: “Please! These gays… they’re trying to murder me!”

Even though Coolidge's character was killed off in The White Lotus, the actress has since gone on to win both the Emmy and the Golden Globe for her portrayal of Tanya.

"Gay men can be catty, but mostly they are the good guys in a lot of films that I’ve seen. But Mike White made these guys kind of wicked, very corrupt soulless guys," Coolidge told Variety back in December. "He told me, 'You end up getting taken in by this group of — well, let’s just say they’re evil gays.' I just got so riveted, I was so enthralled. You know, Tanya’s not onto them, but she’s finally being appreciated and she’s finally having a good time on this horrific trip."

Tanya might have died but our love for Coolidge never will.
