The upcoming documentary Dykes, Camera, Action is taking LGBT storytelling head-on by centering queer women filmmakers who paved the way.

The documentary's goal is simple: to tell the history of lesbian cinema throughout the years, a feat that has yet to be accomplished exclusively on film. Community support for the project has been monumental, and helped Dykes, Camera, Action raise over $15,000 through Seed and Park.

Directed, produced, and edited by Caroline Berler, Dykes, Camera, Action surfaced when Berler felt that on-screen representation for lesbians and queer women was lacking. After earning her MFA at the School of Visual Arts, she interviewed Rose Troche (Big Fish, The L Word), sparking a new desire to talk to other queer women filmmakers about their work and share their stories on screen.

The film spotlights an extensive roster of queer female filmmakers and critics: Barbara Hammer, Su Friedrich, Rose Troche, Cheryl Dunye, Yoruba Richen, Desiree Akhavan, Vicky Du, B. Ruby Rich, Sarah Schulman, Lesli Klainberg, Jenni Olson, Rachel Reichman, Yvonne Welbon, among others.

As film critic B. Ruby Rich says in the documentary's trailer, "Filmmaking went hand in hand with activism. There really was a sense in which we were all trying to make it a new world." With Pride season approaching, this rings especially true.

Dykes, Camera, Action is currently in post-production and release dates are expected soon.
