Amber Riley Will Star In London Production Of "Dreamgirls"

The show marks the first time "Dreamgirls" has played the West End.

Amber Riley will star the first British production of Dreamgirls, playing the iconic role of Effie White, originated on Broadway by Jennifer Holliday.

Book of Mormon Tony winner Casey Nicholaw will direct and choreograph.

Last seen as Addapearle in NBC's The Wiz Live!, Riley had her breakthrough as Mercedes Jones on Glee.

Dreamgirls is a thinly fictionalized retelling of the rise of the Supremes in the 1960s, as three friends endure success, jealousy, heartbreak and more.

The show's 1981 debut on Broadway was a smash hit, and won six Tony Awards. Though the 2006 film version by Bill Condon was also a success—earning Jennifer Hudson an Oscar—its only been revived on Broadway once, just two years after the original production closed. A new version on the Great White Way is long overdue.

Dreamgirls will open at the London's Savoy Theatre in November.
