Pride is resistance, and Alok Vaid-Menon won't let us forget that.
The nonbinary writer, activist, and former Logo30 honoree joined Pride Live for its third annual Stonewall Day event, livestreamed on Logo's YouTube and Facebook in partnership with WarnerMedia, Nasdaq, and Pride Media. This year, the star-studded event is a benefit for four LGBTQ advocacy groups facing financial hardships amid the COVID-19 crisis: The Ally Coalition, Brave Space Alliance, TransLatin@ Coalition, and Trans Lifeline.
"As we commemorate Stonewall Day, it's important to remember that this fight started with trans women and gender non-conforming people of color who physically resisted hate, discrimination, and police brutality," Vaid-Menon said in their spot introducing Trans Lifeline, a trans-led group that provides peer support to trans and gender non-conforming people. "Their actions led to the Pride celebration we've had all month."
The activist went on to acknowledge the many people who are still fighting for safety or equality around the country.
"That's why Trans Lifeline exists: to connect trans and gender non-conforming people with community, resources, and support, such that our communities can not only survive but also thrive," they added.
