Anti-bullying charity Ditch the Label and research firm Brandwatch were able to pinpoint the epicenters of homophobia after reviewing a random sample of 19 million tweets in the UK and the US between 2012 and 2016.

Of the 19 million tweets, 390,000 contained anti-LGBT language, a number that experts say actually suggests a decline in homophobic sentiment. Among the reviewed tweets, racism and sexism were more prevalent than homophobia.

Researchers estimated that for every eight positive or neutral tweets about the LGBT community, there was one negative tweet.

According to the research, the five US states with the highest rates of homophobic tweets were Michigan, Ohio, Nevada, Arizona and Texas.

Unsurprisingly, the survey found that anti-LGBT tweets were more common among men than women, with 64% coming from male social media users.
