"Glee" Meets "Friday Night Lights" In First Trailer For NBC's Musical Drama "Rise"

Developed by Tony-winning "Hamilton" producer Jeffrey Seller, the show features a closeted high-school performer.

NBC has released a new trailer for Rise, its high school theater-focused musical drama.

The inspirational series is based on the true story of a passionate Pennsylvania drama teacher, played by How I Met Your Mother's Josh Radnor. He sparks controversy when choosing the sexually charged, gay-inclusive musical Spring Awakening as the year’s big production.

Originally titled Drama High and based on Michael Sokolove's 2013 memoir of the same name, Rise also stars Rosie Perez and breakout Moana star Auli'i Cravalho.

Ted Sutherland plays Simon Saunders, the school's closeted gay leading man. Tony-nominated Falsettos star Stephanie J. Block plays Simon’s devout Catholic mother, Patricia, who butts heads with her husband over their son’s involvement in the school musical.

The show is developed by Tony-winning Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller and Emmy-winning Friday Night Lights creator Jason Katims.

“It’s a lot like Friday Night Lights where it’s life around [high school],” Rise star Damon J. Gillespie tells EW. “A lot of people have been comparing us to Glee, and the thing that Glee did is amazing, but what Jason’s about to do is really get to the truth. So we’re not going to like break out into song and tell the story through song.”

Rise also features Joe Tippett, Sean Grandillo, Billy Joe Kiessling, Marley Shelton, Shirley Rumierk, Taylor Richardson, Rarmian Newton, Casey Johnson, and Stranger Things Emmy nominee Shannon Purser.

Rise premieres March 13 on NBC.
