Pregnant Kehlani Responds to Haters Questioning Her Queer Identity

The singer describes her baby's father as her "very best friend and lover."

It's a girl!

Kehlani announced Friday on Instagram that she is four months pregnant and expecting a daughter. The 23-year-old singer-songwriter also shared beautiful photos of her growing baby bump.

“if you know me, you know i’ve dreamt about motherhood since i was very young," Kehlani writes. "when asked what my goals are, it’s always the idea of a big healthy happy family & whatever comes along is a plus.”

"i am so honored to be given this gift by spirit, creator, and an amazing partner whom i trust with my body and life," she continues. "i knew sharing something so personal and precious could bring stress into my world but there isn’t a word anyone would say my way that could take away from this."

"i am happy to document this journey and feel the freedom any pregnant person should. i’m looking forward to sharing my little world with you all... my partnership with my very best friend and lover, our journey of conception, my choice for a natural home birth..."

Kehlani, who publicly identified as queer in April, also tweeted about her partner, calling him "quite frankly the only man on earth i trust."

Later, clapping back at haters seemingly unable to reconcile her queer identity with her male partner and pregnancy, the former Poplyfe member tweeted, “imagine thinking queer means lesbian and either means unable to have babies."

Also responding to online trolls, Kehlani wrote, "the hate is more so confusion from people who just truly don’t want to understand. i’ve let the internet take away some of my best years and that won’t ever happen again."

Although Kehlani did not explicitly reveal the identity of her child’s father, additional social media posts seem to indicate that it's Javaughn Young-White, brother of gay comedian Jaboukie Young-White.

Javaughn tweeted, "y’all act clueless when queer people procreate because your limited understanding of queerness is strictly gay sex so anything outside of the conscious sexualization of queer people is a shell shock to y’all and it’s so ugly, every time."

Jaboukie, a correspondent for The Daily Show, captioned an Instagram photo with Kehlani and his brother "going guncle."
