The 2014 Grammys just got a lot more exciting: The New York Times is reporting that 34 gay and straight couples will be wed during Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' performance of "Same Love."
Who will officiate this amazing group wedding? None other than rapper/actress/talk-show host Queen Latifah. (Will 'Tifah take the opportunity to come out, or just give a shout out to "my people"? We'll have to wait and see)
Lewis says the event “will be, in our minds, the ultimate statement of equality, that all the couples are entitled to the same exact thing.” His sister is among those who will get hitched at the show.
The ceremony was the idea of longtime Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich, whose daughter is a lesbian, and the rap duo were eager to join in. (Lewis and Macklemore are nominated for seven Grammys tonight, including Song of the Year for “Same Love.”) Erlich says the event reflects his own personal beliefs, "but I would not want to make a broad statement that it represents the views of the academy or the CBS television network.”
Grammy executives are indeed prepared for some negative backlash: “I expect that people with all kinds of opinions might voice them,” says National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences president Neil Portnow. "and that’s healthy."
With Madonna all but confirmed to be joining the boys for the song, this could be the gayest moment on television ever.
