Cara Delevingne Dishes on Her Mom, Her GF, and That Iconic Sex Bench
Queer actress Cara Delevingne has bared all—literally and figuratively—for Marie Claire's 2019 September Obsession issue.
Speaking to writer Julia Felsenthal, Delevingne got real about being queer and dating women. The British-born actress, singer, and runway model revealed that she spent years totally denying her attraction to women because she "didn’t want to feel different," even though, she says, "I always felt I didn’t belong."
Delevingne added that she's now taking a more balanced approach to life, prioritizing her own needs and implementing personal boundaries.
One part of her life the Carnival Row star is loud and proud about? Embracing sex positivity with her girlfriend, fellow actress Ashley Benson. You may recall the pair, who confirmed their relationship publicly back in June, breaking the internet with some amazing paparazzi shots of them moving a sex bench into their shared apartment. Delevingne maintains that the shots weren't staged or taken "on purpose."
"I’m not just talking about sex for sex; I’m talking about experience, whether it’s abuse or confusion, positive or negative," she told the magazine, recalling the particularly memorable way her mother first talked to her about sex:
My mom decided to tell me that Father Christmas wasn’t real. And in the same conversation, she said, "By the way, let’s talk about the birds and the bees." I was like, "This timing is terrible."
Delevingne, who's 26, says her relationships with her family members are far less strained than they were in her youth. In fact, her father, Charles Delevingne, a wealthy real estate developer, even attended June's Trevor Project Gala in New York City, where she was honored for her LGBTQ advocacy. She also performed a song at the event, showcasing her impressive pipes—but not before thanking Benson for her love and support and stumbling over a false start with her guitarist.
"It’s worth the wait," she joked between takes, "like my coming out!”
