VH1 Trailblazer Honors to Celebrate Groundbreaking Filmmaker Ava DuVernay

Girl power!

This year's VH1 Trailblazer Honors is all about girl power.

In previous years Trailblazer Honors has celebrated activists, icons, and celebrities who have blazed a path, and broken down barriers. This year the VH1 special is highlighting women, and female empowerment.

"VH1 Trailblazer Honors will celebrate today’s most respected politicians, entertainers, artists, activists, allies and icons who have dedicated their time and steadfast commitments to the women’s movement and beyond. Centered around this year’s incredible breakthroughs in female empowerment and human rights, the annual event will feature the landmark achievements of its honorees," the network said in a press release about the event.

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay has been announced as the first honoree at this year's Trailblazer Honors. She is the groundbreaking director behind Selma, A Wrinkle in Time, and OWN's Queen Sugar.

The landmark television special will air on International Women's Day, March 8 at 9/8c on VH1 and Logo. Previous Trailblazer ceremonies took place at the Cathedral of Saint John The Divine in New York City, but this year the event will be held at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles, a National Historic Landmark and extension of the Ebell of Los Angeles, a 125-year-old organization founded by women for women.

Stay tuned for additional honorees to be named in the month leading up to VH1 Trailblazer Honors.
