Bad Bunny and Gael García Bernal's 'Cassandro' Kiss Heats Up Sundance

The two actors share a steamy scene in the buzzy new biopic.

Park City, Utah might be chilly, but Bad Bunny and Gael García Bernal are heating up the screens at Sundance.

The two actors share a kiss in the new movie, Cassandro, which tells the true story of Saúl Armendáriz, an LGBTQ trailblazer in the world of amateur wrestling, who was hailed as the “Liberace of Lucha Libre.” Armendáriz eventually upends the macho wrestling world with his popular flamboyant persona, Cassandro, and becomes the first foreign-born wrestler to win a Lucha Libre world title.

The film, directed by Roger Ross Williams who co-wrote the script with David Teague and Julián Herbert, had its world premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and Twitter got a sneak peek of an intimate scene from the movie thanks to some leaked images from a screening.

According to Remezcla, Bad Bunny plays Felipe, a young man who "comes to Cassandro’s side at the behest of a shady promoter. The drug dealing henchman’s responsibility is to handle every one of Cassandro’s needs, and Felipe does." The two grow close, and their "flirtatious relationship" eventually leads to a steamy kissing scene between the two actors.

The Hollywood Reporter chief film critic David Rooney wrote how Bernal “nails his best role in years, giving a performance steeped in cheeky humor, resilience and radical self-belief — not to mention some amazingly nimble moves.” Rooney also said the film offers an “exhilarating exploration of fearless queer identity in a macho environment.”

This isn't the only queer project Bad Bunny (a.k.a. Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) is currently involved in. It was recently reported that the Latin trap and reggaeton superstar is bringing the hit YA novel, They Both Die at the End, to Netflix.

Cassandro just had its world premiere at Sundance and is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video later this year. After seeing these images we are already adding it to our watchlist.
