Angelica Ross Leaves Twitter After Onslaught of Transphobic Harassment

Pose star Angelica Ross helped create a memorable and historic event when she hosted GLAAD, One Iowa, and The Advocate's LGBTQ Presidential Forum last Friday, but the spotlight also put her on the receiving end of some violently transphobic harassment on Twitter.

Shortly after the forum—during which most of the Democrats in the running for the party nom in 2020 discussed LGBTQ issues—Ross gave a tell-all interview to The Guardian.

The actress and trans advocate spared no punches, calling out candidates Bernie Sanders and Beto O'Rourke, who missed the event, and Queer Eye star Karamo Brown, who faced immense backlash on social media after saying former White House press secretary Sean Spicer is a "nice guy."

"I was disappointed to not see all of the candidates here," Ross told The Guardian, noting that Sanders also isn't planning to attend the Human Rights Campaign and CNN's LGBTQ debate in October: "You don’t show up for both of our LGBTQ events? That’s obviously telling us all we need to know."

It wasn't the first time she'd explicitly mentioned Sanders, either. She also posted a Twitter thread before the September 20 forum highlighting his scheduling conflicts.

After tweeting out a link to the interview, Ross was quickly inundated with replies from angry Sanders supporters, who took issue with her questioning the Vermont senator's support of LGBTQ rights.

However, the majority of hateful tweets came from Trump supporters, who spouted hateful rhetoric about trans people being mentally ill.

Early Sunday morning, Ross tweeted that she's planning to take a break from social media and will have her press team run her accounts.

But transphobes on Twitter couldn't stop the American Horror Story: 1984 actress from attending last night's 71st Primetime Emmy Awards alongside her Pose co-stars—including first-time Emmy winner Billy Porter, who scored Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Pray Tell.

Ross even took over Glamour magazine's Instagram Stories at the ceremony, which aired on Fox from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

An icon who acknowledges when she needs a break and refuses to let the haters slow her down? We have to stan.
