Based on the popular YA fantasy novels The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, Shadowhunters is coming to ABC Family (sorry, "Freeform") this winter.
The series sees young Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara) on a quest to find her missing mother and learn about her own identity as a Shadowhunter, a human with angelic powers.
Besides the sparks that fly between Clary and fellow Shadowhunter Jace (Dominic Sherwood), the other big coupling on the show is between Magnus Bane (Harry Shum, Jr.) and Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario), who fall for each other as they fight off demons.
Shum describes Magnus as a "freewheeling bisexual," a 400-year-old warlock who has seen (and done) just about everything.
NewNowNext was on the Toronto set of Shadowhunters and talked with Shum about the show, his character's "dark secrets" and why Magnus is so drawn to the dreamy Alec.
"When you've lived that long, you definitely take in a lot of different experiences," Shum says.
"What I love about this character is he has this element of being broken-hearted, but he also has this element of seeing someone who takes his breath away... and he almost doesn't know how to function [around Alec]. When you've had that much experience, feeling that way is powerful stuff."
Shadowhunters premieres in early 2016 on ABC Family/FreeForm.
