There's certainly no lack of LGBT characters in Marvel comic books, but when will we see an out hero (or villain) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Sooner than you think, according to the directors of the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, hitting theaters tomorrow.

In an interview with Collider, brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, who will also be heading up the massive two-part Avengers: Infinity War, discussed the possibility of including LGBT characters in the Marvel universe.

“I think the chances are strong," says Joe. "I mean, it's incumbent upon us, as storytellers who are making mass-appeal movies... to diversify as much as possible."

"It’s sad in the way that Hollywood lags behind other industries so significantly," he continued, "One, because you think that it would be a progressive industry. And, two it’s such a visible industry. So I think it’s important that on all fronts we keep pushing for diversification—because then the storytelling becomes more interesting, more rich, and more truthful."

But blockbusters increasingly rely on international box office, and the inclusion of a major LGBT character in a future Marvel movie may not go over well in places like China, Russia and Saudi Arabia—ironically where such representations are needed the most.

Anthony counters that "in success it become easier to take risks," suggesting that Marvel has more room to push boundaries now that the Avengers and related films have made major bank.

"[We're able to infuse Civil War]" with unconventional ideas... in terms of what people's expectations of a superhero movie are."

With that kind of success comes "more of a boldness in terms of what you can try and where you can go," he says, which makes both brothers hopeful that "moving forward, bolder and bolder choices can be made."
