RuPaul's Drag Race and The Golden Girls are two of the greatest shows of all time, so a panel at this weekend's DragCon combining the two was nothing short of sickening.
Jim Colucci, author of Golden Girls Forever: An Unauthorized Look Behind the Lanai, hosted a panel with Alaska 5000, Madame La Queer, Pandora Boxx and Joslyn Fox to spill the tea (and serve the cheesecake) on everyone's favorite ladies from Miami.
Colucci is a veritable expert on all things Golden, and shared his vast array of knowledge with an ecstatic panel and audience.
The author revealed that the show's makeup artists already struggled with getting Estelle Getty into her Sophia makeup as it was, but the actress made it even harder when she got a face lift in between seasons.
"That is tea, girl!" Alaska said with a dropped jaw before declaring that Getty couldn't have been the only one in the cast to have gotten a little work done. "That final season, Rue McClanahan, Blanche, is snatched!"
Colucci said the sitcom resonated with the gay community from the beginning, and remembers music pumping at the clubs in the '80s and then suddenly shutting off so that everyone could watch The Golden Girls.
"I think it comes down to the fact that they built a surrogate family out of their friends, and that's what a lot of us here have done," Colucci explained as a reason that so many gay people connect to the show.
The panel also opened up about how the iconic sitcom has influenced their lives and their drag.
"I always threaten my own mother with Shady Pines," joked Joslyn. "It works!"
"I think there's a little bit of Blanche in everybody," said Alaska, before adding why she thinks drag culture blends so well with Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia.
"They're queens and they're reading each other," the season 5 fan favorite said. "On the show, for the reading challenge, I know I lifted jokes directly from The Golden Girls."
