49 Scholarships Honor Lives Lost at Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub

The 2016 gay bar shooting claimed 49 victims.

The onePULSE Foundation has announced its application period for the first 49 scholarships established in honor of the victims of the Pulse nightclub tragedy.

On June 12, 2016, 49 people lost their lives at the Orlando gay bar in what was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history at that time.

The first application window for the Legacy Scholarships will open online December 1 with a deadline of January 31, 2020.

"Working with the families and loved ones of those killed, onePULSE Foundation will establish the scholarships based on the respective victims’ interests, careers or aspirations," according to a press release. "As an extension of their impact on our world, the scholarships will inspire and empower students who share similar dreams, ambitions and goals."

"The onePULSE Foundation will award 49 scholarships annually, each up to $10,000 for use at an accredited institution of higher learning, including career and technical schools. The first scholarships will be awarded for use during the 2020-2021 academic year."

High school seniors or students currently enrolled in a higher education institution are eligible to apply. While onePULSE Foundation will consider many factors when assessing scholarship applicants, preference will be given to Pulse survivors or immediate family members of the 49 victims.

"We will never forget the 49 Angels taken from us that day," says onePULSE Foundation Board of Trustees Chairman Earl Crittenden. "This scholarship program will honor each victim and continue their legacy. Each Angel was special and loved, and we hope that through these scholarships, generations of students and professionals will continue to be empowered and inspired by their lives."

"AdventHealth is proud to honor the lives of the victims by supporting an initiative that will offer people in our community an opportunity to pursue their goals and dreams," says Samantha Kearns-O’Lenick, Executive Director of AdventHealth Community Impact. "We stand by the onePULSE Foundation in helping our community continue to heal and feel whole while shaping its future."

The onePULSE Foundation recently unveiled the winning design for Orlando's National Pulse Memorial & Museum, which is projected to open in 2022.
