Presenting the 2011 AfterElton Hot 100... The World's Hottest Men as Chosen By Our Readers
You’re about to be, because we have the results of the 2011 AfterElton Hot
100!
Just a few statistics... For this our fifth annual poll, almost 10,000
readers lodged over 50,000 name votes, nominating more than a thousand different men.
Of the top 100, nearly a quarter of them are out gay or bisexual men, so way
to go home team!
As is becoming an annual ritual, there is some unpleasant news. Only seven
guys on the Hot 100 are men of color –
up from six last year. We think this speaks to the relative lack of racial
minorities among the ranks of TV and movie celebrities (where most Hot 100
picks come from). But given that only 70% of the U.S. is white, it’s also worth asking:
do some gay and bisexual men need to broaden their definition of what it means
to be hot?
In terms of professions represented, the list is slightly more diverse than
last year, with 83 men being TV, movie, and Broadway actors (compared to 88
last year). The rest come from a variety of other fields including musicians,
athletes, journalists, ballroom dancers, and even British royalty.
Not surprisingly, most of the straight folks on the list have either played
gay roles before, or have spoken up in favor of GLBT rights. Also not
surprisingly, most guys who might be hot but either avoid gay issues or have
expressed discomfort with gay folks didn’t even come close to making the list.
but we will tell you that he's not a repeat winner from any previous year. In
fact, this is the first year he's even appeared in the rankings!
Do you like the results this year – or are you disappointed? Either way, why
not spread your thoughts via social media like Facebook and Twitter?
One reminder: please don't reveal the winner in your comment's subject line,
since some folks like to be surprised.
Finally, we kindly ask that you do not copy and reproduce the entire Hot 100
list anywhere else. We work very hard
putting this together and ask that if you’d like to say something about the
list on your own site, that's great, but please then link back to the list in
its entirety here!

It has been just over a year since Latin heartthrob Ricky Martin came out as a "fortunate homosexual man," but since then he has been very busy raising his two adorable sons, promoting his memoir, releasing a new album and touring worldwide. Through the years, Ricky has rocked a variety of looks, from his Menudo mop top, to his flowing tresses as Miguel on General Hospital, to his more recent buzz cut, tattoos and facial scruff. Through it all he's been the essence of Latin hotness. We're glad he's finally out. When you think about it, we're the fortunate ones.

Oh you silver fox. Wherever there's a natural disaster in the world, or political upheaval expect CNN's dashing Anderson Cooper to earnestly be wading through it in a pair of galoshes. He's also had time for fun, whether it be hosting New's Year's Eve celebrations with Kathy Griffin - or playing a version of himself in a hilarious SNL digital short. Handsome as he is, cracking the Hot 100 top ten this year is no minor accomplishment. He's not exactly forthcoming about his personal life. But who knows, maybe he'll win the whole thing next year.

Six years of playing Supernatural's demon hunting Dean Winchester paid off! Maybe it's the gruff demeanor, the boots, the muscle car or all that hoyay, but Jensen Ackles has some serious fans here at AfterElton. His co-starts Misha Collins and Jared Padelecki also made the list, but coming in at #8 has Ackles leaving them far in the dust. What did he do, make a deal with the devil?
Great news, Supernatural was renewed for a seventh season. Here's hoping the demon-hunting next year doesn't require a shirt.

He may be a sweetheart in real life, but this singing/dancing/acting wonder is totally believable as Rachel Berry's straight, self-absorbed paramour Jesse St. James on Glee. That makes Groff one of the select few out gay men to play a straight romantic interest on U.S. television.
Glee might have made him famous, but Groff was already well known in the theater world thanks to his lead role in Spring Awakening (also opposite Lea Michelle). He's also made independent films and recently starred in the London West End revival of Deathrap.
We love his smile, his brown curls, and most definitely his voice. Like Rachel Berry, we too would put up with the insufferable Jesse St. James if only he promised to sing to us!

Sadly Brothers & Sisters has been canceled, so that means we won't be seeing any more of the adorable Scotty Wandell. But you can bet this won't be the last you see of handsome, out Canadian actor Luke Macfarlane. Five years on Brothers & Sisters showed us his talents as an actor, a singer (did you see the episode where he sang that touching Irish funeral song?), and even a potential underwear model-- at least based upon what we saw in a few brief briefs scenes. Hubba hubba.
Okay, he's probably too serious an actor to pursue underwear modeling, but keep your options open, Luke. And come back to television soon, we're going to miss you!

In our opinion, Scottish/American actor John Barrowman is a victim of bad
timing. We're convinced that if his wildly popular series Torchwood aired before voting
in the Hot 100 ended, he might easily have ended up in the very top spot. But,
no, Torchwood won't return until July, which is when the 44-year-old triple
threat (Barrowman can sing, dance and act) will see his profile rocket
upward worldwide and put him in the forefront of not just the minds of millions
of gay fans, but millions of straight fans as well. John might have finished in
the fifth spot this year, but given that Torchwood
last aired in 2009, we think it's a testament to his talent, sexiness, and
outspokenness as a gay rights advocate that he still scored the number five
spot on this year's list.

Well, all good things come to an end. After a remarkable two year run as #1 on the Hot 100, Neil Patrick Harris drops to number four. But while he might be losing the Hot 100 crown, he's still our Gay Man of the Decade, and he'll be keeping busy hosting the upcoming Tony Awards.
We love Neil Patrick Harris. If it had a better ring to it, we might even have been AfterNeil.

3. Chris Colfer
Rank last year: 27
While many fans of Chris Colfer are no doubt disappointed the man who
breathes life into Glee's Kurt Hummel didn't actually win this year's Hot 100,
they should still celebrate his phenomenal showing. After all, only two other
men got more votes (one of whom Chris is very familiar with) and Colfer is
having an extraordinary year.
Actually, the twenty-year-old actor might be having the most extraordinary
year any out actor has ever had. In addition to being the breakout character on
one of the most popular shows on television, Colfer scored a surprise Emmy
nomination, was named to the 2011 Time 100, has graced numerous magazine covers
(including EW's cover story about
bullying), and sold his first script.
Oh, and let's not forget, AfterElton readers did vote Chris number one on
our recent AfterElton.com Gay-List which ranked the most popular gay
2. Adam Lambert
Rank last year: 5
While the top spot in this year's poll might have gone to a straight man,
the top ten was dominated by out and proud gay men, and leading the pack is
none other than 29-year-old Adam Lambert. The American Idol runner-up might not have had nearly as high profile
of late as he did during his Idol run
or with the release of his first album, For Your Entertainment (which
reached #3 on the U.S. charts and sold 800,000 copies in the U.S.), but our
readers' affection for him hasn't lessened in the slightest. Indeed, Adam moved
up from #5 to #2 and can now lay claim to the title Hottest Gay Man in the World. Or at least in the
opinion of AfterElton.com readers. Then again, who would know better?

And now, the man who ranks #1 on the 2011 Hot 100...
1. Darren Criss
Rank last year: N/A
To say that actors dream of the sort of year twenty-four-year old Darren
Criss is currently having is an understatement of epic proportions. Criss is
now so currently fixed in the pop culture landscape that it's hard to believe
that most of us had never heard of him before November of last year. That's
when he joined the cast of Glee as a
mentor and possible love interest for Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) and when
"Teenage Dream" rocketed around the internet.
Given the popularity of Glee, his making The AfterElton Hot 100 was probably a given, but
even when we didn't expect him to rocket to the number one spot, the first time
a newcomer has debuted at the very top. Yet, just as his version of
"Teenage Dream" soared to number one on iTunes, Criss has claimed the
title of #1 on the Hot 100. And gazing at those adorable brown eyes that make
Kurt melt, how could it be any other way?
