Your First Look At Peppermint In Broadway-Bound Go-Go's Musical “Head Over Heels”

The "RuPaul's Drag Race" star plays a nonbinary troublemaker.

She's got the beat—and a face beat for the gods.

RuPaul’s Drag Race fans know season 9 fave Peppermint is starring in Head Over Heels, a new Broadway-bound jukebox musical featuring the music of the Go-Go’s. This summer she'll become the first openly trans woman to originate a principal role on Broadway.

Produced by Gwyneth Paltrow, Head Over Heels features a book by Tony winner Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q) and Go-Go's hits like "We Got the Beat" and "Our Lips Are Sealed," plus Belinda Carlisle solo singles “Mad About You” and “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.”

Only three official production photos have been released from the pre-Broadway engagement, which opened this week and runs through May 6 at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco, and you’d better believe one of them spotlights Peppermint as Pythio, the nonbinary Oracle of Delphi.

An updated take on Sir Philip Sidney’s Elizabethan romp Arcadia, adapted by James Magruder, the musical focuses on an ancient Greek royal family cursed by the oracle's prophecies, which set the show's many conflicts in motion.

"What makes the show click," says the San Francisco Examiner, "is its outstanding cast and director Michael Mayer’s keen sense for just how far to milk a gag and when to pluck the heartstrings. It’s a seamless mix of low comedy, romance and transgressive messaging, bringing 'the other' from the periphery to center stage empowerment." The review also teases that the shape-shifting Pythio "has a secret of her own."

Peppermint, who released the trans anthem “Blend” with Cazwell last month, is also the subject of an upcoming documentary titled Project Peppermint.

Following its San Francisco engagement, Head Over Heels begins performances June 23 and opens July 26 at the Hudson Theatre in New York.
