This Map Tracks All 917 Hate Groups In The United States

Is a known terror group operating in your backyard?

With the ugliness in Charlottesville putting a spotlight on hate in this country, its important to remember the Southern Poverty Law Center has been working to teach tolerance, fight bigotry, and seek justice since 1971.

As part of its mission, SPLC identifies and tracks hate groups nationwide, and its Hate Maphighlights different 917 extremist organizations—including neo-Nazis, anti-government militias, radical Christians, and anti-LGBT groups.

The SPLC defines a hate groups as ones with "beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics," using reports from citizens and law enforcement, as well as the groups' own websites and literature, to make its designations.

CHARLOTTESVILLE,VA-AUG11:Chanting White lives matter! You will not replace us! and Jews will not replace us! several hundred white nationalists and white supremacists carrying torches marched in a parade through the University of Virginia campus last night.Beginning a little after 9:30 p.m., the march lasted 15 to 20 minutes before ending in skirmishing when the marchers were met by a small group of counterprotesters at the base of a statue of Thomas Jefferson, the universitys founder. A glance at the map is quite terrifying: It includes at least 45 groups that are marked anti-LGBT, with chapters in multiple cities and states. There are profiles of the leading offenders, including Paul Cameron of the Family Research Institute, Lou Engle of The Call Ministries, and Gary Demar of American Vision, which works toward "an America that recognizes the sovereignty of God over all of life and where Christians are engaged in every facet of society."

The Hate Map helps officials to follow these groups, and also tracks changes in their activity. (In 2016 there was a 197% increase in total number of anti-Muslim hate groups from the year before.) If you know of a hate group that's not highlighted here, report it to the SPLC, as well as your law enforcement.
