Bisexual John Constantine Coming To "DC's Legends Of Tomorrow"

The demon hunter dreamboat is back.

Constantine is returning to the Arrow-verse.

The smoking, bisexual supernatural investigator has been a part of the DC Comics universe for more than 30 years, but when the character made the jump to the small screen for a live-action NBC series, Constantine only lasted for one 13-episode season before being canceled.

Matt Ryan appeared as John Constantine on an episode of Arrow in 2015, and now he is reprising his role as the demon hunter for a two-part arc on this season of DC's Legends of Tomorrow on The CW.

"Having Matt Ryan reprise his iconic — dare we say legendary — role of John Constantine on Legends is something that [executive producer] Marc [Guggenheim] and I have been working toward since season one, and now the stars have finally aligned," executive producer Phil Klemmer told The Hollywood Reporter.

"While we are working to finish our 2017 Arrow-verse crossover, which is no joke the most ambitious bit of network TV that four shows have ever had the audacity and insanity to endeavor, we were looking for a way to make an equally exciting 2018 return. That's how we came up with Matt Ryan."

Fans were miffed to learn that when John Constantine jumped from the comics page to TV he would not be bringing his bisexuality with him, as executive producer Daniel Cerone told the Television Critics Association when the show was announced to air on NBC:

“In those comic books, John Constantine aged in real time,” he said. “Within this tome of three decades [of comics] there might have been one or two issues where he’s seen getting out of bed with a man. So [maybe] 20 years from now? But there are no immediate plans.”

Now the Legends of Tomorrow version of Constantine will be a more accurate portrayal of the character, with his bisexuality intact. "We knew that an alienated, chain-smoking, bisexual, world-weary demonologist would feel right at home among our Legends,” said executive producer Phil Klemmer

In addition to Legends of Tomorrow, Ryan will also voice the investigator on The CW Seed's animated series, Constantine, which is set to debut early in 2018, around the same time as his appearance on DC's Legends of Tomorrow.
