Almost Love

Originally titled Sell By, actor-turned-filmmaker Mike Doyle’s ensemble rom-com stars Scott Evans and Augustus Prew (the pair recently dodged a masked slasher in Hulu’s homo-horror romp Into the Dark: Midnight Kiss ) as a gay couple hitting a major relationship bump on their fifth-year anniversary. Meanwhile, the pair’s straight BFFs endure their own relationship woes: Cammy (stand-up comedian Michelle Buteau) learns that the guy she’s dating is homeless, and private tutor Haley’s (Zoey Chao) hot but dim teenage student (Christopher Gray) is crushing hard on her. There are laughs, feels, and a cameo from Patricia Clarkson—and nobody gets murdered! (Available April 3 on VOD, Vertical Entertainment)

Lazy Susan

Sean Hayes flexes his range as both a co-writer and the star of this comedy about a cringey cisgender female oddball, Susan (Hayes), whose complete lack of ambition finally catches up with her. Now middle-aged, unemployed, single, and still living with her parents, Susan realizes there must be more to life. Bonus: Matthew Broderick, Allison Janney, J.R. Ramirez, and Margo Martindale co-star. (Available April 3 on VOD, Shout! Factory)

Onward

Lena Waithe, who’s killing it with her new autobiographical BET series Twenties, brings her voice to Pixar’s comedy about trolls (which are happening whether you like it or not), playing Disney’s first LGBTQ character, Officer Spector. The lesbian cyclops refers to her girlfriend and child in a scene that is being snipped or altered for the film’s release in more conservative countries, and causing domestic right-wing organizations to fume and fret. Fuck 'em, though: Waithe reportedly wrote a spin-off for the character already, and producer Kori Rae is living for it. (Available April 3 on VOD, Disney)

Devs

The eight-episode FX series from sci-fi mastermind Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation), about a tortured tech genius (Nick Offerman) who goes to murderous lengths to keep his company’s top-secret project under wraps, features Pose’s Janet Mock in a small role as a senator. Garland, who wrote and directed every episode, also cast cis actress Cailee Spaeny as Lyndon, an adolescent cis male coding prodigy; many viewers have perceived the character as nonbinary or trans, but Garland insists he is a boy. (Streaming new episodes Thursdays on FX on Hulu)

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

It’s 18th-century France, and artist Marianne (Noémie Merlant) is summoned to a seaside estate in Brittany to undertake a clandestine mission: Befriend Héloïse (Adèle Haenel), a young woman about to be married off to a Milanese nobleman, and stealthily paint her portrait for the groom-to-be (who hasn’t even met her yet). Over the course of her stay, Marianne becomes infatuated with her suspicious, unhappy subject—while under the watchful, sympathetic gaze of young housemaid Sophie (Luàna Bajrami), who contends with her own tormenting secret. A Cannes screenplay prize winner, writer-director Céline Sciamma’s artful, aching, complicated lesbian love story will stay with you. (Streaming now on Hulu)

Unorthodox

Inspired by the 2012 memoir by Deborah Feldman, and shot in Yiddish and English, this tense four-episode Netflix series sees a young Hasidic Jewish woman, Esty (Shira Haas), break away from her Brooklyn community and arranged marriage to find freedom in Berlin, where her lesbian mother (Alex Reid), who fled years earlier, lives. Fun fact: Unorthodox director Maria Schrader starred in 1999’s Aimee & Jaguar, based on a real-life lesbian affair between a Nazi officer’s wife and a Jewish woman (it’s streaming for free on Vudu!). (Streaming now on Netflix)

Gayme Show!

Dave Mizzoni and Matt Rogers (the latter's sassy podcast with Bowen Yang, Las Culturistas, kicked off its latest season in March) co-host this new comedic competition series in which heterosexual contestants duke it out for the title of “Queen of the Straights” with help from queer celebs including Joel Kim Booster, Trixie Mattel, and Bob the Drag Queen. With new episodes streaming daily (eight total, running about 10 minutes each), Gayme Show! marks the launch of the new short-form-content streaming service, Quibi, also home to a queered-up reboot of 1990s MTV dating show Singled Out, co-hosted by Booster. (Premieres April 6 on Quibi)
