Ruby Rose has quit Twitter following backlash after she was cast to play lesbian superhero Batwoman, aka Kate Kane, in the CW's "Arrowverse."
The role will make her the first LGBTQ lead in a live-action superhero series, which was the cause for much celebration among a swath of fans. Some, however, were less than pleased with the announcement and began targeting Rose's social media accounts with negative comments.
In addition to leaving Twitter, she has also limited commenting on her Instagram account.
"Where on earth did 'Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can't be batwoman' (sic) come from—has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I've ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with 'she's too gay' how do y'all flip it like that? I didn't change. I wish we would all support each other and our journeys," Rose wrote in one of her last tweets, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"When women and when minorities join forces we are unstoppable...when we tear each other down it's much more hurtful than from any group. But hey/ love a challenge I just wish women and the LGBT community supported each other more, My wish was we were all a little kinder and more supportive of each other...Sending everyone my love and gratitude, it's been a rollercoaster of a year, this month especially," she continued.
"I am looking forward to getting more than 4 hours of sleep and to break from Twitter to focus all my energy on my next 2 projects. If you need me, I'll be on my Bat Phone."
Rose is far from the only woman driven off the platform by harassment and negativity. Other celebrities to leave Twitter over the hostility include Stranger Things actor Millie Bobby Brown, and Kelly Marie Tran and Daisy Ridley, both of whom have roles in the Star Wars franchise. Leslie Jones also briefly quit Twitter following backlash to her role in the Ghostbusters reboot.
Batwoman will make her first appearance in the "Arrowverse" crossover event in December, and The CW is developing a Batwoman series for next season.
