Bolsonaro Says Brazil, U.S.A. United on "Traditional Family" and Against "Gender Ideology"

"We have many views that are similar," Trump said of the man who would rather his son be dead than gay.

President Donald Trump is hosting Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro at the White House today, and the two held a joint press conference in the Rose Garden. Bolsonaro told reporters the two countries were aligned on their conservative social agendas.

"Brazil and the United States stand side-by-side in their efforts to ensure liberties in respect to traditional family lifestyles, respect to God our creator, against the gender ideology or the politically correct attitudes and against fake news," he said through a translator.

Bolsonaro is often compared to Trump, and has a history of anti-LGBTQ statements, including saying he would rather his son be dead than gay. He also wasted no time in turning that hateful rhetoric into practice, going after the LGBTQ community on day one of his administration.

In fact, the situation has gotten so bad that one openly gay Brazilian lawmaker fled after receiving death threats.

Trump said he and Bolsonaro are "going to have a fantastic working relationship," and added, "We have many views that are similar."

In particular, Trump said he was "very proud to hear the president use the term fake news."

"Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is a tyrant who has condoned violence against LGBTQ people, even if it means death," GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. "Americans should be disturbed that the President of the United States is holding meetings with Bolsonaro and choosing to set a dangerous precedent by normalizing an anti-LGBTQ tyrant."
