There Was Almost More Dick in "The White Lotus" Season 2

"We shot that and it felt too much, too aggressive."

Anyone who has been a longtime fan of HBO knows that from Oz to Euphoria, the premium cable network has a history of full-frontal male nudity — a tradition that continues with the new season of The White Lotus.

The Emmy-winning series is currently airing its second season, and while the first season featured a shocking rimming scene, in the Season 2 premiere viewers were treated to a flash of penis when Theo James' character did a quick outfit change.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, James was asked about the scene in the first episode where his character Cameron strips down to change into a swimsuit as Harper (played by Aubrey Plaza) inadvertently watches in the hotel mirror — and the actor revealed how the original plan was for him to show even more:

"What he does is — this is Mike's writing — he treads the boundary of how calculated that was, or was it just easy-breezy?" James told EW, referring to White Lotus writer-creator Mike White. "On the day, we had to figure out what that was because the original derivation of it, it's kind of full-frontal, if you know what I mean."

"We shot that and it felt too much, too aggressive. What we came to is a bit more opaque, and that's exactly what Mike does so well," the actor explained.

Even though James' full-frontal shot was left on the cutting room floor, this season of The White Lotus is still currently airing, so who knows what Mike White has in store for viewers. In the last season, the infamous rimming scene between Murray Bartlett's and Luke Gage's characters was featured in the fourth episode — with Bartlett eventually winning an Emmy for his role as Armond, the unhinged hotel manager.

"Mike just makes you feel like you can completely play on set," Bartlett told Logo when asked about filming the rimming scene. "You're just exploring, but he gives you this incredible library of information about the character in the script. So I didn't have a lot of questions and I feel like he didn't really need to explain a lot of stuff. We just played."

Everyone say "grazie" to White for keeping the tradition of male nudity alive at HBO. The White Lotus is currently airing Sundays on HBO.
