When news first broke of The L Word reboot coming to life, fans were beyond themselves with excitement.

Back in November 2017, it was announced that writer-director Marja-Lewis Ryan would be the sequel's showrunner and executive producer. Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig, and Leisha Hailey—who all starred in the original series—were also confirmed to be part of the sequel.

But since then, the status of the show has been uncertain.

Showtime president of programming Gary Levine spoke about the reboot's current status at the Television Critics' Association earlier this week: “There are a lot of revivals out there,” he said during Showtime’s executive session. “We are working hard not to repeat ourselves. If we end up with a show that has something new to say, we will be excited to proceed.”

In a statement, Ryan wrote that: "I am beyond excited for the opportunity to usher in the next generation of diverse queer people. I couldn’t imagine a better time to make this show."

The original The L Word revolved around a group of lesbians in West Hollywood and their friends, family and lovers. It was the first show that centered on lesbians, and quickly gained a strong following of fans. The reboot will focus on how the Los Angeles lesbian community has changed since the original show's airing in the early 2000s, while updating viewers on where characters are today.
