Peacock's Queer as Folk, promises plenty of partying and sexy scenes — it is still Queer as Folk, after all — but the new series trailer also reveals that the season will revolve around a nightclub shooting inspired by the 2016 Pulse massacre.

"I knew from the beginning there was only one way and one reason to reimagine the show. I didn’t want the title just for the sake of the title. I wanted to re-envision it through the lens of what happened post-Pulse. Pulse is a specific event that targeted the Latinx community in Orlando," creator and executive producer Stephen Dunn recently told The Hollywood Reporter.

"Our show is completely fictional, but the trajectory of our story is inspired by the realities of what that was like — not just that night, but the aftermath and the way that the community of Orlando rebuilt in the wake of that tragedy," Dunn explained.

As Logo reported back in 2021, Peacock’s reboot of the groundbreaking original U.K. series — not the Showtime remake — moves the action to New Orleans and follows a new crop of queer characters. The cast includes Candace Grace (Acts of Crime), Logo Live host Johnny Sibilly (Pose, Hacks), Devin Way (Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19), Fin Argus (Clouds, The Gifted), Jesse James Keitel (Big Sky), and Ryan O’Connell. Guest stars announced include Kim Cattrall, Benito Skinner, Nyle DiMarco, Megan Stalter, and Juliette Lewis, among others.

"What you’ll see in Queer as Folk is the honest truth of what it is like to go through something like that and how it’s not this saintly victim tragedy story. These are real people and they’re not victims," Dunn told THR. "They survived a tragedy, and they are human beings whose lives were completely turned upside down after this. And this community all responded in completely different ways."

This version of Queer as Folk is being described as “a vibrant reimagining of the groundbreaking British series created by Russell T. Davies, exploring a diverse group of friends in New Orleans whose lives are transformed in the aftermath of a tragedy.”

“I’m very proud of what we achieved in 1999, but in queer years, that was a millennium ago! As a community, we’ve radicalized, explored, opened up, and found new worlds — with new enemies and new allies — and there was so much to be said,” said Russell T. Davies in a statement about the reboot. “Stephen pitched a brand new version of Queer as Folk with so much imagination, insight, and crucially, joy, that I simply couldn’t resist. I thought it was about time the title belonged to a whole new generation. The 2022 show is more diverse, more wild, more free, more angry – everything a queer show should be.”
