Opinion: Why MAGA People Don't Need Safe Spaces

A new app is like the Yelp for conservatives, helping them avoid triggering spaces. Snowflakes, much?

63red Safe is the latest ploy trying to convince adamant supporters of Donald J. Trump that white and conservative is the new Black. In the wake of Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s Great Red Hen Fiasco of 2018, the app aspires to be the Yelp of the Make America Great Again crowd, allowing users to rate and find pro-Trump restaurants and businesses where they won’t be harassed for hastening the downfall of western civilization.

“I'm trying to position it as an everyday 'where can I go eat safely' app,” Scott Wallace, the app’s founder, told The Daily Beast.

Members of the Trump administration have made headlines for their abusive and deleterious policies being mildly inconvenienced in public establishments, from the press secretary being asked to leave a restaurant in Lexington, Virginia to senior advisor Stephen Miller getting royally burned at a Mexican restaurant in Washington, D.C., and Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen being booed out of another D.C. Mexican restaurant two nights later.

Then there are all the countless [?] stories of MAGA hats being pulled from heads—literally tearing at the very fabric of our society, if that fabric is a cheap poly-cotton blend because, hey: Red lives matter.

It's just not safe to advocate for the separation of migrant children from their families, the emboldening of white supremacy, the erasure of transgender rights, the erosion of environmental protections, the underwriting of the one percent at the expense of the poor and middle class, and the myriad shitty things the MAGA hat signifies anymore. Sad!

Like the Donald Daters app before it, which tried to "make America date again" until it leaked its entire user database, 63red Safe wants to provide a safe space for those who suddenly find themselves experiencing a tiny whiff of what it's like to be an oppressed minority in America. But unlike Donald Daters, 63red offers a suite of apps to meet the multi-faceted needs of today's irony-immune bigot, especially with the impending End of Days election.

"I believe that, between now and 2020, we’re going to see the rise of the socialist goon squad," Wallace said. “I think antifa was nothing compared between now and what’s coming in 2020. And I’m deeply concerned."

It's always so funny how conservatives are so concerned about the rise of anti-fascism but seem totally fine with actual fascism blossoming like weeds wherever they stand.

The whole idea behind safe spaces is for marginalized people to have a place where they can be free from discrimination, harassment, and danger. That's not to say that MAGA people don't face these things. Just last month, a man allegedly pulled a gun on a couple over their MAGA hats in that hotbed of socialist goonery: Bowling Green, Kentucky.

One of the victims, Terry Pierce said he was "shocked" his hat could elicit such a negative reaction, telling BuzzFeed News, "It blows me away that our country has become so divided because of liberalism."

BuzzFeed noted that Pierce is very active on Facebook, having "posted false conspiracy theories about the migrant caravan, calling reports that people are fleeing from hardships in their own countries 'fake news'...[and sharing] an image of the Qur'an in flames with the text 'let's see how many of you have the balls to share this.'"

That damn divisive liberalism!

Though this is an extreme case—and yet another example of why America needs really any kind of federal gun control legislation—for Fox News and their ilk, this kind of story exemplifies what they've been dog-whistling all these years: That the great white way of American life is under attack.Of course, the cynical (or the casually observant) might say that those dog whistles have become full-blown whistles because complacency doesn't win ratings or elections.

Regardless, the thing is, and this cannot be stressed enough, MAGA is not an identity. MAGA is not an ethnicity. MAGA is simply an ideological choice, and a poor one at that. MAGA supporters are not marginalized by the dominant majority because MAGA (i.e. Donald Trump and the GOP) is the dominant majority. Despite the loss of the popular vote, MAGA runs the country, it runs the Senate, it runs the Supreme Court. MAGA is the infectious disease crippling our democracy, or at the very least, our belief in it.

MAGA people are not a minority; if anything they’re a minority within a majority, a majority that has had the majority for centuries. Historically, because the world has been their safe space, MAGA people don’t require one and they should never have one: All they’re escaping from is reality. And their avoidance of reality is not helping anyone; it's not helping Us, it's not helping Them, it's not helping the country.

What 63red is trying to shield people from is the fact that yes, they actually might be racist because they support a racist; yes, they might be homophobic because they support a homophobe; yes, they might be an Islamaphobe because they support an Islamaphobe, etc, etc, etc. The reality is that people are being hurt everyday by this administration and the future we have to look forward to is increasingly bleak and precarious.

Sure, we're living in a polarizing point in history, but avoiding any difference in opinion or point of view only contributes to the disconnect between the left and right. Waving a gun in someone's face doesn't help anything either, but much like Nazis, I thought that was something we had settled awhile ago.

If we all live in our own bubbles, stepping out into the real world can be sobering, but in these heady times, sobriety is not such a bad idea.
