Jinkies! "Scooby-Doo! Mystery Inc." Producer Confirms Velma Is Gay

"I've said this before, but Velma is not bi. She's gay."

One of the great Scooby-Doo mysteries has finally been solved. No, not who is the Ghost Clown terrorizing the local circus, but if Velma Dinkley is gay—as fans have long suspected.

Tony Cervone, supervising producer for Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated has confirmed that the nerdy teenage sleuth was supposed to be a lesbian on the critically acclaimed animated series that ran from 2010-2013.

"I've said this before, but Velma in Mystery Incorporated is not bi. She's gay," Cervone responded to a fan on Instagram. "We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character while she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why."

"There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago," he adds, citing Marcie Fleach, a character introduced in the cartoon.

Scooby-Doo fans have long questioned Velma's sexuality, and after Cervone confirmed their theories, Scooby-Doo movie director James Gunn also chimed in saying Velma was "explicitly gay" in his initial script—before the studio watered it down to nothing.

Last year, Linda Cardellini, who played Velma in the two live-action Scooby-Doo movies, told NewNowNext that she acted as if Velma was gay in the films:

James Gunn wrote that script and it originally had a lot of funny stuff tackling that, but a lot of it got taken out of the movie. I had this whole scene where Velma got drunk, danced on a piano, ripped open her shirt, and had on this orange and red Cross Your Heart bra. I sang a love song, and at the end I pointed. Because she’s drunk, the point was right between Daphne and Fred, so they looked at each other and couldn’t figure out who I was pointing at. There was an ambiguity there that people felt from the cartoons. But I think that scene got cut because the studio didn’t want kids seeing Velma drunk.

Here's hoping Velma finally get a girlfriend in the next Scooby-Doo series. Until then, does anyone know if Crystal Cove has a gay bar?
