Rob Lowe's New Show, "The Grinder," Is Totally Trolling The Gays
We can't stop noticing ads for Rob Lowe's new series on Fox—mainly because it's called The Grinder.
Lowe plays a former TV lawyer who heads back to his hometown after his long-running show (also called The Grinder) is cancelled and tries to be a lawyer for real.
There are thousands of things Fox could've called the show. Here's five off the top of our heads:
Approach the Bench
Judge Not
Overruled!
Order in the Court
Law Schooled
But they went with a term that's, in 2015, mostly associated with a gay hookup app.
Maybe if his character worked in a coffehouse or a sub shop? (To be fair, Urban Dictionary says a "grinder" can also refer to a persevering poker player, but that seems like a far mountain to climb.)
Lowe even referenced Grindr when promoting his show this summer.
“Look, I’m very current," he told ET. I’m culturally significant. I could be on the Grindr app.”
Now comes the show's tag line: "Rob Lowe will get you off… the hook."
And this.
We'll be checking out The Grinder when it debuts Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 8:30pm, but only because we like Robe Lowe in comedy, and the show co-stars Fred Savage, William Devane, Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Christina Applegate.
And maybe because of the ads a little bit.
