We're going to get a character who may initially come across as loud and obnoxious, though in the midst of a lot of hilarious physical comedy you may just end up learning something from her.

But is that onscreen persona wearing thin with audiences after it was perfected in Bridesmaids with Kristen Wiig, Identity Thief with Jason Bateman and The Heat with Sandra Bullock? Not at all! And McCarthy's latest offering, Tammy, proves it.

In the film, co-written by McCarthy and real-life husband Ben Falcone (who also appears early in the film as Tammy's boss and also makes his directorial debut), Tammy is someone who, in a single day, loses her job, her car and her man and decides to hit the road with her alcoholic grandmother (Susan Sarandon). Hilarity ensues as you might expect (watch Tammy smash up Grandma's car, watch Tammy on a jet ski) but the film also reveals a heart and says more than you might expect about relationships, growing older, taking action in your own life and, more importantly, that lesbians always throw the best parties.

Yes, there is also a gay presence in Tammy in the form of on-screen couple Kathy Bates and Sandra Oh, who not only present one of the few healthy and positive portrayals of a couple in the film, but they also know how to throw a kick-ass party.

TheBacklot recently sat down with McCarthy, Falcone, Sarandon and Bates as well as Gary Cole and Mark Duplass, who play father and son in the film. During the interviews, we talked about those lesbian role models and the messages in the film. We also asked Sarandon about the recent selfie she took with Thelma and Louise co-star Geena Davis and whether Bates sees her lesbian role in the 1998film Primary Colors as one that paved the way for other lesbian characters in film.
