A Debate About The Gender Of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"' Droid BB-8 Rages On

LucasFilm's creature shop says that the adorable droid changed genders during filming.

When the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer debuted, the world fell in love with BB-8—the droid that's just two balancing balls. But a debate sparked about whether the character is male or female.

Neal Scanlan, the head of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens creature shop, says BB-8 hasn't maintained a consistent gender since being introduced.

“BB-8 was female in our eyes. And then she became male," Scanlan explains. "And that’s all part of the evolution—not only visually, but in the way they move, how they hold themselves.”

This must have come as a surprise to JJ Abrams, who had always intended BB-8 to be female.

Sources told The Telegraph “There’s never been a strong female robot in any Star Wars film. JJ [Abrams] was determined to make BB-8 cute and strong—and female. They want to appeal to girls as much boys, who have traditionally been the fan base. She’s going to be one of the breakout hits of the film."

Does a droid have to have a binary gender? And can we just assign pronouns because of how a droid, no matter how adorable, carries itself? If the droid doesn't declare a gender, does it matter?

Keep rollin', BB-8. Keep doing you.
