“My job is to have horrible opinions,” jokes Patti Harrison, the comedian who made you hiccup from laughter with her role as Ruthie on Hulu’s Shrill. Harrison, who’s trans—and has asthma!—has drawn strength and inspiration from trailblazers like Janet Mock and Laverne Cox. “Being out has taught me that I have a thicker skin,” she says, “and that more people have the capacity to learn and change.”

As she gears up for Season 2 of Shrill, Harrison will also join the writers' room of Netflix’s animated series Big Mouth, which is entering its fourth season.
