A New Madonna Era Has Arrived: Meet "Madame X"

The Queen of Pop has finally revealed the title of her 14th studio album.

After what felt like years of teasing, Madonna has finally unveiled her new project: Madame X.

For weeks, the Queen of Pop has been filling her social media accounts with cryptic images of Xs and random words. This weekend, she finally posted the snippets as a grid on Instagram, which reveal a description of who Madame X is:

"Madame X is a secret agent, traveling around the world, changing identities, fighting for freedom, bringing light to dark places. She is a cha cha instructor. A professor. A head of state. A housekeeper. An equestrian. A prisoner."

On Friday, April 12, Madonna posted a playlist titled #magic on Spotify, with classic songs of hers like "Material Girl," "American Life," and "Music." If you read the first letter of each of the songs in the playlist, the selected tracks spell out "Madame X."

In the video teaser for the new album, Madge dons a variety of disguises as she explains why she decided to call her 14th studio album Madame X:

"Madame X is a secret agent traveling around the world, changing identities, fighting for freedom, bringing light to dark places. Madame X is a dancer, a professor, a head of state, a housekeeper, an equestrian, a prisoner, a student, a mother, a child, a teacher, a nun, a singer, a saint, a whore, and a spy in the house of love. I’m Madame X.”

As MuuMuse points out, Madonna found inspiration for her character from a 1966 Lana Turner film titled Madame X.

The letter the titular Madame X signs in the opening of the movie is identical to the description Madonna posted on her Instagram account. In full, the description for the movie reads:

A woman married to a wealthy socialite, is compromised by the accidental death of a man who had been romantically pursuing her, and is forced by her mother-in-law to assume a new identity to save the reputation of her husband and infant son. She wanders the world, trying to forget her heartbreak with the aid of alcohol and unsavory men, eventually returning to the city of her downfall, where she murders a blackmailer who threatens to expose her past. Amazingly, she is represented at her murder trial by her now adult son, who is a public defender. Hoping to continue to protect her son, she refuses to give her real name and is known to the court as the defendant, ‘Madame X.'

Not only did the "Hung Up" singer have us absolutely gagged with the announcement of her new album, but now, we've also learned that the world will not have to wait long to hear what this new era of Madonna will sound like.

On Monday, April 15, she revealed that the LP's lead single, "Medellin," is a collaboration with Colombian reggaeton singer and songwriter, Maluma. The best part? It's dropping this Wednesday, April 17.

We're counting down the hours, but as Madonna taught us years ago, time goes by, so slowly. Between the new song and a whole new album, we can't wait for our Madge-ical summer to begin.
