"Y: The Last Man" Comic Book Being Turned Into TV Series For FX

The post-apocalyptic drama imagines what would happen if every man on Earth suddenly died—except for one.

From Flash and Arrow to The Walking Dead, TV has been pretty kind to comic readers of late. Now, the acclaimed indie comic Y: The Last Man is coming to the small screen, with Brad Simpson and Hunger Games producer Nina Jacobson producing a series for FX.

Originally published on DC's Vertigo imprint from 2002 to 2008, Y followed Yorick Brown, the only man to survive a mysterious plague that kills every mammal with a Y-chromosome. Strangely, the only other male survivor is Yorick's monkey, Ampersand.

Written by the acclaimed Brian K. Vaughan, the comic examined how the world would function without men, and was very grounded in real world dialogue and issues. (Despite the similar setup and title, its a far cry from Fox's The Last Man on Earth.)

There are several lesbian characters in the series, including Dr. Allison Mann, a geneticist who becomes a close ally to Yorick. Alison even gets a few romances along the way, including trysts with an American spy and an Australian naval officer.

Then there are the bad-ass Daughters of the Amazon, who think the plague was Mother Nature's judgement on men. Amputating a breast in solidarity with the ancient Amazons, they attack "patriarchal symbols" like sperm banks and trans men.

In fact the series makes a lot of bold statements about gender and sexuality in a brave new world where the old rules don't—can't—apply.

This isn't the first time someone's tried to adapt Y: The Last Man. Constantine producer David Goyer hoped to turn it into a trilogy of movies, and two producers from the TV show Jericho attempted a film version as well.

The series has its share of celebrity fans including Joss Whedon and Chuck star Zachary Levi, now appearing in Heroes Reborn. Wouldn't Levi make a great Yorick?
