2014 got off to a beautiful start today, as Danny Leclair and Aubrey Loots became the first gay couple to get married atop a float at the 125th annual Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California.

Leclair, 45, and Loots, 42, won a lottery held by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which wanted to commemorate the reinstatement of marriage equality in California and underscore the role that marriage can play in reducing HIV infection. "

One of the things we’re really excited about is we’re standing on the shoulders of thousands of men and women who came before us in this fight for marriage equality," Leclair said earlier. "We’re excited to be part of that story, to be able to do this because of them. We’re looking forward to honor that."

The ceremony was held at approximately 9:45 am Pacific time, when the AHF float was scheduled to stop in front of cameras during the live broadcast.

Not everyone was happy for the lucky couple: San Diego loon Sharon Grube launched a protest against what she claimed was a "flagrant display" of the gay agenda. NBC 4 in L.A. reports that at least 16 people were arrested at this year's parade, but it appears most were part of a PETA demonstration against a float sponsored by SeaWorld.
